Those who engage in regular binge eating are at risk of becoming overweight or obese, which can pose further general health and medical problems. Binge eating often involves an inability to control the amount of food one consumes.
According to the Body Mass Index (BMI) a common tool used to assess the weight of adults over 18, a BMI of 25-29 is considered overweight, and a BMI above 30 is considered to be obese. Binge eating is related to psychological distress or unhappiness.
Eating large quantities of food can seem to distract the mind from painful feelings that are difficult to tolerate or can be used more literally to "push" feelings down and out of our awareness. However, being unaware of feelings does not mean that they don't exist, or that they have no influence.
After food is consumed, our bodies release a cascade of chemicals that can enhance mood and alter our mental state. However individuals can also experience guilt and fear of gaining weight after a binge episode, which tends to reinforce a sense of inner helplessness and inadequacy that can accompany binge eating. People may alternate between dieting and binge eating and find themselves sinking further into guilt over the issue.
Common reasons for developing binge eating disorder usually involve an underlying psychological disturbance, with symptoms such as:
Associated binge eating problems can include digestive complaints, guilt, shame, joint pain and degeneration, self loathing, fatigue, depression and more.
The broad question of ‘how much is enough?’ is an interesting question for someone who binges, to ask. Treatment dosage and duration varies between people. Every treatment is tailored to your situation and adjusted to ensure you continue to progress. We may include one or a combination of Buddhist Psychotherapy, Mindfulness Therapy, Psychodynamic, NLP, Hypnotherapy and other counselling methods – the point is to find out what is best for you to help you stop overeating, so you can discover how to nourish yourself differently, and enjoy inner peace.
Treatment at Bayside Psychotherapy caters to the individual needs of the patient and aims to unearth the causes rather than merely applying short term behavioural strategies that revert and lead to more frustration. Our methods come from extensive history with many patients and are based on several treatment options. We’ll aim to unearth and treat the root cause of your urges to binge, so you can gain a deeper sense of self understanding and worth.
