Bulimia nervosa is a serious condition involving episodes of binge eating that are followed by some sort of compensatory behaviour. An episode of binge eating is characterised by consuming a portion of food that is higher than most people would eat during specific times. People often feel out of control during their bulimic episode. Many individuals with bulimia are fearful of gaining weight and therefore engage in compensatory behaviours following binge episodes. This can include self-induced vomiting, abuse of laxatives and excessive exercise. Bulimia is more common in females than males and tends to start somewhere between ages 15-25.

Don’t let Bulimia take over your life and harm your health!
Approaches applied to eating disorders are tailored to your needs at Bayside Psychotherapy. Your course of treatment will depend upon what we consider most appropriate, and may include one or a combination of: counselling, psychotherapy, mindfulness meditation exercises, psychodynamic therapy, dream work, NLP or Hypnotherapy. Although we are skilled in each of these areas, the point is for us to find out what is best for you to stop Bulimia and its causes, so you can discover lasting inner peace and happiness. In addition to individual bulimia psychotherapy, there are also community based resources available.
The first step is to make an appointment. The first session will provide you with an opportunity to find out if you click with your counsellor and to determine an appropriate course of treatment to gain control of Bulimia.
Usually after a few sessions we can ascertain how therapy is helping, and then we will have a clearer idea of how long to estimate for lasting change to occur. It depends how deeply rooted the Bulimia is, but it’s no quick fix. Recommendations could be made for regular sessions for long-term results, until you have things under control. Contributing factors, and how committed you are to addressing Bulimia influences the duration of counselling required.
Even if you have tried psychiatrists, psychologists or other counsellors to stop Bulimia in the past, don't give up. With training in counselling, psychotherapy, hypnotherapy (traditional and Ericksonian methods), NLP, mindfulness meditation, and Buddhist psychotherapy, we have access to a wide array of tools to help you identify the causes, not just the symptoms, of Bulimia.
