Mental health issues can have a flow-on effect, impacting the physical health and social relationships and vice-versa. If left untreated, mental health challenges can escalate and have consequences.<\/p>\n<div class=\"alignleft custom_margin\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.baysidepsychotherapy.com.au\/testing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Bayside-Mental-Health-Statistics-in-Australia-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Bayside Mental Health Statistics in Australia\" \/><\/div>\n<p><strong>Did You Know<\/strong><br \/>\n1 in 2\u00a0Australian adults will face mental ill-health at some point in their lives<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>3,000\u00a0Australians end their lives each year<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Up to $220 billion\u00a0is the estimated cost of suicide to our economy<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Eating disorders affect\u00a0about 1 million Australians\u00a0at any given time<sup>2<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>One in seven Australians will experience depression in their lifetime<sup>3<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>25% of Australians will experience an anxiety condition in their lifetime<sup>3<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Anxiety was the most common group of 12-month mental disorders<sup>4<\/sup> (16.8% or 3.3 million people).<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 4.2 Million Australians (21.4% or one in five) had a 12-month mental disorder<sup>4<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Depression is the number one cause of non-fatal disability in Australia<sup>5<\/sup> (23%).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Use of mental health services<sup>6<\/sup><\/strong>:<br \/>\n3.4 million Australians aged 16-85 years (17%) saw a mental health professional in 2020-21.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"display: inline-block;\">\n<li>13% of people saw a GP for their mental health<\/li>\n<li>8% saw a psychologist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>612,000 Australians also accessed mental health services (in addition to the above) via phone or digital technologies (various crisis support services).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vulnerable groups<sup>7<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some groups of people experience higher rates of mental illness and psychological distress than others.<strong><br \/>\nAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people<br \/>\nLGBTIQA+ Australians<br \/>\nAustralians with disability<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mental Health Support services<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you are seeking treatment for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baysidepsychotherapy.com.au\/testing\/\">mental health<\/a> problem, it is important to talk to your doctor or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baysidepsychotherapy.com.au\/testing\/therapists\/\">mental health professional<\/a> about what options are available and right for you.
