In defence of anger
At its core, anger is a normal and natural emotion. It's an emotion that alerts you to a perceived injustice or to something that isn't fair. Suppressing all anger or pretending you don't experience anger can be as unhealthy as expressing it too often. Failing to express anger merely turns your anger inwards – and that can lead to depression and other health problems, mental and physical.
Do you need anger management counselling?
While an ability to feel anger appears to be a necessary instinctual response, it's likely you have an anger management problem if:
- you become angry frequently;
- your anger develops over very minor matters;
- anger causes you to harm others physically or emotionally;
- you harm yourself physically and emotionally by lashing out or trying to prevent lashing out;
- you become angry for no apparent reason;
The reasons behind excess anger vary and can include unprocessed grief, feelings of insecurity and low self-esteem, a loss of assertiveness and many other causes.
